Breast cancer is a disease affecting women of all ages. While not 100% accurate for diagnosis, mammography is presently the best mechanism in existence for screening purposes. It is universally accepted that the earlier a breast cancer is diagnosed, the better chance a woman has for cure.

The Regional Cancer Center's mobile mammography unit’s goal is to increase the number of women in the area having screening mammograms by being a highly accessible and visible community resource. The mobile unit visits North East twice a year to reach women who do not have easy access to screenings due to work, transportation, financial issues or other barriers. The mission is to provide an opportunity for every area woman 40 and over to receive mammography services and, ultimately, to reduce breast cancer deaths through early detection.

Community Nursing Services of North East has hosted the mobile mammography program since it was launched in 1999. At that time the mobile mammography unit was purchased through a grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation RACE FOR THE CURE®. A grant from the Erie Community Foundation contributed to the purchase of the van in which it is transported. Since then over 4400 women have been screened for breast cancer with the unit.

Funding is available for uninsured and underinsured women through Pennsylvania's Healthy Woman 50+ program and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation RACE FOR THE CURE®. Family Health Council works with the mobile mammography program to coordinate screening services to eligible women. Women with insurance are also welcome to be screened at the mobile sites and their insurance will be billed as it is with any other health screenings. Female technologists who have advanced certification in mammography conduct the screenings and radiologists interpret the mammograms.
