Qualifying for Hospice Care

Hospice services are available to people who can no longer benefit from curative treatment. To qualify for hospice, the individual must be certified by a physician to have a life expectancy of six months or less if the terminal diagnosis runs its normal course. If an individual continues to thrive after six months, the hospice team will confer with the physician and other team members to re-evaluate the individual’s condition.

A common misconception is that hospice care is only for those that have a diagnosis of cancer. Any end-stage illness, such as heart failure, lung conditions, renal failure, Alzheimer’s or several other conditions may be accepted when medical guidelines have been met.

Hospice care is available to those living in their own house, an apartment, nursing home or assisted living facility. Because hospice is a concept of care, not a place of care, every effort is made to enable the individual to remain in their home.
